Das Epos ‚Rudolph von Habsburg. Ein Heldengedicht in zwölf Gesängen‘ (1824) war der Beitrag des österreichischen Dichters Johann Ladislaus von Pyrker (1772–1847) zum nationalen Bewusstsein des eben geschaffenen Kaisertums Österreich. Obwohl die Schlacht auf dem Marchfeld und der Sieg Kaiser Rudolfs I. über König Ottokar von Böhmen (1278) im Mittelpunkt des ‚Heldengedichts‘ stehen, musste Pyrker jede Abwertung von Rudolfs Gegner vermeiden, um die Tschechen, eines der wichtigen Völker im neuen Staat, nicht zu kränken. Die andere Aufgabe beim Schreiben eines patriotischen Epos für das frühe 19. Jahrhundert war es, möglichst viele Völker des Staats wegen ihres Beitrags zu Rudolfs Sieg zu rühmen. Das gelingt Pyrker, indem er immer wieder ausdrücklich die regionale Herkunft von Rudolfs loyalen Truppen erwähnt.

The epic poem ‚Rudolph von Habsburg. Ein Heldengedicht in zwölf Gesängen‘ (1824) was conceived by its author, the Austrian poet Johann Ladislaus von Pyrker (1772–1847), as a contribution to the national consciousness of the recently created ‚Kaisertum Österreich‘. Therefore, although the battle of the Marchfeld and the victory of Emperor Rudolf I. of Habsburg against King Ottokar of Bohemia (1278) are at the centre of this heroic poem, Pyrker had to avoid a negative image of Rudolf’s enemy, the Czechs being one of the important peoples in the new ‚Kaisertum Österreich‘. The other task of writing a patriotic poem for the early 19th century was to praise many peoples of the newly created state for their contribution to Rudolf’s victory. Pyrker achieves this effect by explicitly mentioning the origins of Rudolf’s loyal troops.
