With the first issue of Schnittstelle Germanistik. Forum für Deutsche Sprache, Literatur und Kultur des mittleren und östlichen Europas, a new periodical in the field of German studies is presented, which focuses in particular on German studies research in East-Central Europe. 'East Central Europe' is widely defined in Schnittstelle Germanistik to include the Northeastern and Southeastern European regions. In critical demarcation from ideologically charged, homogenizing spatial constructions, East-Central Europe is understood neither as a geographically firmly delineated nor as a literarily, culturally or otherwise conclusively 'filled' size. It is rather based on the model of an open region of different, interrelated and interdependent literatures and cultures, i.e. a highly changeable ensemble of historically changing structural features. The journal includes scholarly articles, essays, conference reports, project reports, journal reports, reviews, and a doctoral student forum. The topics covered are literary studies, linguistics, didactics, cultural studies, and media studies; the focus is on comparative studies, interculturality, language contact, and literary-cultural interrelations.
